Filled Glass Ornaments

If you’re decorating on a budget this holiday season, consider making your own ornaments to decorate the tree. I came across this idea for DIY Christmas ornaments filled with yarn. What a fun and modern way to integrate household items into your decorating!

Start with clear glass ornaments. These are generally very cheap at Walmart or Target. Buy as many as you need to fill out your tree. You may even have some around the house. Instead of using completely clear, you can also choose glass that’s slightly tinted. As long as you can see through them, they’ll work for this easy craft.

The original concept uses yarn, but you could use any items that will fit through the small hole on the ornament’s neck. For the original design, remove the ornament hanger caps, gently stuff the ornament with colored yarn using a knitting needle and replace the cap. Could this be any easier!?

Since you are working with brittle glass, care in stuffing is a must. If you don’t want to go the yarn route, other potential fillings for the ornaments should be soft and flexible. Bits of fabric, dried flowers or potpourri and confetti could all work. Use a knitting hook to move the bits around until you like the arrangement.

I think snowflakes made from paper doilies would also look very pretty, but they’d need to be inserted folded and opened once they’re inside the glass. While it can be done, the “ship in a bottle” manuevering required would take away from the inherent simplicity of this DIY ornament craft.

Every year, we exchange christmas ornaments during our holiday gathering. This year, I’m on a tight budget, so I’m glad to find this DIY christmas ornament idea. I have some clear plastic ornaments here at the house. I’m wondering if that would work or if I need to use the glass ornaments?

Plastic ornaments should work just fine, as long as they’re clear enough for you to see the yarn (or other decorations) you stuff inside!
